Chapter Twelve
âThatâs not the only thing we discovered,â Madison reported to her husband as they rode the elevator to their fifth-floor suite. After a nice dinner out, they were returning to their hotel room.
She referred to her presence there in Waco simply as a âmid-week visit.â
âThe blue car had definitely been at the house before that day,â she continued. âWhoever the man was, he knew Rose and visited her house several times in the days preceding his death. Has Perry learned anything more?â
âNot yet. The prints arenât in any of the criminal databases, and no one has reported a man missing, at least not in River or the surrounding counties.â
âSo how do we identify him?â
âWe wait.â He put emphasis on the word as he unlocked their door, clearly referring to law enforcement. âEventually, someoneâs bound to report him missing. The autopsy may also give us some insight, but thereâs no telling how long that will take.â
Madison ignored the implied exclusion. âIt would help if we could find his car,â she said.
âIâve got my officers and the county deputies scouring the area, but thereâs a lot of dirt roads to go down. It could be literally anywhere.â
âGrannyâs neighbors remember hearing dogs barking around midnight on Tuesday night. Eloy Palacios says the smaller van returned sometime before dark and stopped near the trees beside Grannyâs to fix a flat tire.â
âSounds convenient enough,â Brash considered. âWhile one man distracts attention with a flat, the others pull the body into the woods. They could easily return at midnight and transfer it to the garage.â
âSpeaking of flats, did I tell you I had one yesterday? I went by to visit Granny Bert, and when I came back out, my front driverâs side tire was almost flat. I guess the heat got to it.â She shrugged before changing back to the original subject.
âIâm pretty sure youâre right,â she continued. âThey stashed the body in the woods and came back later to move it. Two people thought they had seen unusual lights among the trees that evening. Which reminds me. Arlene Kopetsky says she had seen lights in the house at night before Rose moved in.â
âMaybe Rose forgot to turn them off when she visited earlier in the day.â
âNot those kinds of lights. Flashlights, or even candles, she said.â
âProbably a reflection,â Brash guessed. âEmpty houses have a lot of odd angles and see-through spaces.â
âProbably,â she agreed. âWe didnât get to venture into the rest of the house when we visited. Genny hinted at getting a tour, but Rose never offered. Maybe weâll have better luck next time.â
âYou plan on going back? Do you think sheâll let you in?â
âI donât know. But I agree with you. Something is definitely off with her and that house.â
âJust be careful. If weâre right, this woman is dangerous.â
When Brashâs phone rang, Madison slipped into the bathroom to start her bedtime routine. She was taking off her makeup when he stuck his head inside the door.
âI hate to do this to you, but I have to check on something really quick.
